During the summer of 2021, I was invited to teach music to kids ranging the ages of 10 to 14 years old at Gilbert Albert Community Center.
To me, it was a challenge and an adventure to teach music to kids as a summer program, that I gladly accepted. My students were up to date with the most popular songs of the year. I perceived how much of an influence Hip Hop is to their generation, so I used it to teach them about music and technology.

Towards the end of the summer program each student produced and wrote a song which they performed to their parents at the end of the program. I collaborated with Mrs. Neusa, an English Language teacher and Mr. Kern, a visual arts teacher to make the students’ final presentation an interesting combination of poetry, painting, and music.

At the end of the event, many parents thanked me for the opportunity to have such a beautiful and loving moment with their kids. That and so many other aspects made it a life changing experience that reinforced to me the colossal power music has on connecting different generations inside a family.

“Ko dizizti di bo me”“Don’t give up on yourself”

As the title suggests, the music is about one’s self-love and strength on dealing with depression, one of the biggest health problems in the past decade. Jap Pires took this campaign across continent to Europe (Portugal), South America (Brazil), Africa (Angola) and hosted multiple seminars in high schools and colleges throughout Cape Verde islands.

The song is a dedication to all single mothers that struggles every day to support their family. In the song Thairo speaks of himself as a kid that was raised with lack of love due continuous conflict between his parents.

Me and Thairo Kosta produced, arranged the record, and envisioned a strategy to get community leaders and the Cape Verdean government representatives involved in the project.
